26 febbraio Bath-house as an entertainment!Every Sunday I go to public bath-house (better known name sauna) “Sanduny” with my friend Elena (not yoga-teacher but another one). It is one of the national Russian entertainment, I saw a lot of foreigners there. On the wall I even saw wrapped up in sheets Silvester Stallone who visited Sanduny few years ago (not only him but lots of stars). I decided to describe how it looks like, maybe chaotic but from the heart. Theresa, U welcome to prepare yourself for my country and its beauties!
First step when U come into lobby – U should bye A TICKET for 2 hours in 1st or high-class. We - Elena and I go to 1st class because there are 2 wooden vats with ice water. So… men and women take a bath separately. But it’s case only for the public bath-houses. In the countryside people always go to take bath altogether – men, women, the aged and children. I remember such things from my childhood. The last weekend in Aksakovo we went to sauna. Finnish sauna is not the same with Russian bath with steam, it's dry.
So… in the big hall U search for free numbered place on the chesterfield there U take off your clothes and slip on some sheet or Turkish towel. Don’t be afraid if U forgot something at home – U can find everything there even slippers or Bath-caps. Usually people drink some green or herbal-tea (or beer) before taking a bath. My friend Lena and I we brought 2 kinds of honey to taste.
Bath-house attendants came out the bath-room to the hall and call everybody “UNDER THE STEAM” and fun begins! It’s about +110C or more inside and each person is searching for place to seat on the wooden floor as fast as it is possible. Because when U step in, sometimes it’s too warm so U should cover your face with towel to protect the skin from burns...
When everybody sits, attendant increase the steam to the maximum splashing the water on heated bricks of the gas-furnace and after on the walls below us. I can’t spend more than 10 minutes there, briefing slowly without any movement and eyes closed. From inside it looks like if U are on another planet. Then U go out the bath-room and dive into ice water, usually 3 times in the name of the Holy Trinity.
One of the most important thing in a whole process is “ THE GOOD BROOM”. Good Broom is a CONCEPT! Bath-broom could be oaken, birchen or made from eucalyptus fronds. Brooms are waiting for their time boiled in wash-tubes…
After few sittings under the steam attendants calls everybody “UNDER THE BROOMS”. Because steam for the broom could be “softer”. Elena immediately takes an oaken broom from hot-water and begin to lash my whole body while I lay down the bench screaming “hold on! Hold on!” The same repeats when I take broom in my hands. Broom plays the role of a natural scrab and it cleans and renew the skin perfectly.
In last 15 minutes U should find some time to scrape off the rest with some hand-made masks – for example: ground coffee & honey is trendy in Moscow now. We mostly use ground oat in cream. It smells so nice that I never resist the temptation of taste some “porridge”
2 hours are finished so U should leave your place on the chesterfield and join the people on the snow-covered streets…
24 febbraio photo-idea from Ron
Once Upon a Time on Planet Earth A Global Unity Project
Once Upon a Time on Planet Earth there was an event so big that it changed the course of humankind. An event that shook the Earth to its very core. It is an event we are destined to see again if we do not change the course of world affairs. WHAT WAS THIS EVENT? Can you guess? The details of this event are well known and will be revealed at a later date. The idea is to get people from all over the world to participate in a single project to photograph their part of the world on August 6 at exactly 8:15am .........(the exact time and date of this historic world altering event). The project will be limited to 200 participants from around the world. For more details on this project contact me at littlebookofman@hotmail.com include your name, the country you represent, and what you think this WORLD ALTERING EVENT was. Remember, the date is AUGUST 6 at 8:15am. The photographs taken on this day and this time will be used to create an Online Exhibition to commemorate this WORLD ALTERING EVENT. It is my hope that this can become an annual event with participants from around the world. FROM RON 22 febbraio yoga under the snowit's so cold at work-place that in today classes instead of doing "relax-program" - I forced my students into standing postures and other activities. But me (!) kept walking between the mats barfooted oh! My teeth were knocking all the time so unfinished phrases froze in the air. And of course I didn't stay in personal room to finish my own practice and catching a chill by the way. My friend Elena, who teached class before mine, has commented everything occured like "anti teeth-clattering practice"... those are features of the national yoga in Russia - WELCOME! 18 febbraio weekend far from the city...it was great weekend with my new friends I met on the Stockholm trip. I always wonder how friendly and funny people can be in spite of the fact that modern society is hard-hearted. They cared of my vegetarian diet and never pressed on me to drink alcohol for "keepin' up the party". We had a lot of fun in sweeming pool and on the skating rink (I never skated before!). And of course I can hardly forget our night-fight in the snowdrifts - monkey business in the snow is great. I shooted over 200 snowballs and my arm still hurts today... I came back home with a sence that I spent over a week (!) in winter-dream world... far from the city, far from cares and speed of the world... 16 febbraio about racism in RussiaTheresa, I watched this video U gave me. I'm not sure about this fire in Lumumba-univercity because I didn't hear exactly what happened and nobody knows. And I heard about those murders in Voronezh and St-Petersburg, it's awful especially when children were attacked. But guy who attacked sinagoga - he went in jail for sure. In my building one african man live for 20 years, Antonio. I never heard from him about beating but I know he doesn't have too much good friends in neithborhood. I can speak only about ignorance in this case... Sometimes people are afraid of strangers, not only black but any stranger. Actually I met real neo-nazi Miron. He was very interested in my friendship and romantic maybe for few days but after he asked me "aren't U Jewish maybe?" ...so I laughted and told him "if I AM - would U get out right now or wait for 15-20 minutes?" I lost his tracks, he was intelligent but wrong educated, that's it... Few days ago I've been in subway and saw black guy who was asking about some destination - 3 young people came (including me) to help him with the map.
I'm probably an idealistic person but racism won't go deep into russian mind because it's not natural for us. Our most famous poet was black-rooted, U know, Pushkin ...
Hope to see U in Moscow and feel free to ask anything U need, I will try to help
this girl lives in Moscow-center all her life, U may contact her probably and ask about racism?
take care! |
